JKeene Reviews-BAMF Paradigm v1.0 ROM For Galaxy Nexus!!!!

I was pretty excited to see that Team BAMF was coming out with a ROM for the Galaxy Nexus.  Team BAMF has been around for a while and has put out some amazing work, ask any Thunderbolt ROM flasher! They have been waiting untill this ROM was ready for primetime before releasing it and I must say it was worth the wait.

I am coming off of a few weeks with the LiquidSmooth ROM (review here) so expectations for this ROM were very high. The team built this ROM for functionality and speed with a stock feel. They didn’t go nuts on the tweaks, mods, and theming, which if you have used Android 4.0 is never a bad thing.  This ROM is not as heavy on customization however while the team does not go crazy they included all of the good ones.  On BAMF you will find soft keys tweaks, the usual Overclock/Underclock options, notification mods, even an extensive list of Quick Settings mods. You can choose from 18 different apps and programs to start right from your navigation bar including a custom selection where you can choose any action from a long list of options. You simply choose any apps you want to quick start from you notification bar and they are all lined up for you.  Very cool stuff! It takes a while to find all of the extras like the custom LTE widget or how pulling down on the lockscreen takes you straight to Torch but it is worth looking around! I can’t say enough about how fast this ROM feels.  Daily use just feels swift and smooth compared to other ROMs.  The kernel onboard is TeamBAMF’s own( it’s overclocked to 1.35GHz)and it is a gem! Everything just feels fast and while I missed some of the custom options I found myself really liking how responsive my phone was on this ROM.  Here is a list of the custom BAMF add ons,

  • All stock sound files
  • Sped up notification LED
  • Spare Parts enabled and added to build
  • Additional live wallpapers not included in AOSP
  • Enabled extra browser settings
  • Modified camera to have all 4.0.3 bugfixes without continual auto-focus
  • Increased rotation and animation speed and opened up 360 degree rotation
  • Accurate battery
  • Custom clock widget from ICS pre-release
  • Added long press of Recent apps to activate menu key
  • Configurable Search soft key with option to enable/disable
  • Separate ringer and notification volumes
  • T9 dialer courtesy of CyanogenMod with optional settings in dialer
  • Custom launcher with search bar removed, 4×5 grid layout, and custom app drawer button
  • End Call button in ongoing call notification

BAMF Add-ons:

  • Custom boot animation with audio (thanks to gadget! for the logo)
  • BAMF LTE Widget
  • BAMF Torch Widget
  • Configurable Lockscreen with three hotseats, selectable left target, and pull down for Torch
  • Completely configurable QuickSettings replacing normal settings in Status Bar
  • Custom unknown caller images (thanks gadget!)
  • BAMF Settings (huge thanks to Stericson for the RootTools SDK which we incorporated for root functionality)

1. App Test

I used the usual roundup here, games included Anomaly and Shadowgun.  They worked great and loaded very swiftly.  Gameplay was hiccup free.  Google Plus worked like a charm and never game me any problems, even the Messenger section seemed to be behaving.  Tweetdeck performed admirably and overall I have no complaints about any apps on this ROM at all.

5 out of 5

2. Launcher Responsiveness

Here I used the stock launcher and Nova Launcher.  Between the two of these launchers I had zilch for problems.  Both worked smoothly and swiftly.  There were no reboot issues like I had on Liquid or slow downs at any time.  Great job Team BAMF!

3. Battery Life

Well this is another area where I had no problems at all on this ROM.  Battery life was comparable to all of the other ROMs I have used.  I was surprised by this, figuring the overclocked kernel would be offset by a hit in battery life.  The BAMF kernel left me pleasently suprised though.  While it was no better then other ROMs I had no trouble getting 14 hours out of the phone on WiFi and LTE with average use!

5 out of 5

4. Sound Quality

Well as I am typing this I am listening to Google Music through my phone and I have to say that The Gaslight Anthem has never sounded so good.  The sound through the headphones is great, ringer and game volume was just fine as well.  In-call volume was the only area that seemed a little bit off. I found myself trying to raise the volume during calls on more then one occasion with different people only to find it maxed out.  It wasn’t terrible and I could hear just fine but maybe I like my in call volume a little loud. 4 out of 5

5. Browser Testing

Here I used the stock browser and the new Chrome browser as well. I am happy to report that the Chrome browser plays along just fine with the ROM and the stock one worked well also.  No complaints in this department either.

5 out of 5

I know when I write these I usually love to talk about how many different ways a ROM lets you customize your own experience.  This time I have to say this ROM does not include as many options to do this as many of you are used too.  It does include all of what I feel is essentaial tweaks for a Android 4.0 ROM at this point so I don’t think anyone will be truely dissapointed here.  I do think that if you give this ROM a shot you will be very impressed at the smoothness and the speed it brings to the table.  I found myself not even caring about some of the missing tweaks as I wizzed right through my menus and watched everything load as soon as I asked it too. I guess what I am trying to say here is that even though this ROM may not have quite as many under the hood options as some ROMs I really feel it has offered me the best user experince of any ROM that I have tested.  Yes last week Liquid took the crown for best ROM I have used however for daily use and smoothness BAMF is going to be tough to beat by anyone.  Team BAMF has a long history of quality ROMs on multiple devices and it is great to see that they brought their A game to the Galaxy Nexus!
