This literally took no time. On the very day the EVO landed it got a one click root and now developers toastchf has brought the ability to write to system by way of recovery. Backup, Restore, and Flashing Zips are working but there is no mass storage or touch for now. The XDA post also includes the stock recovery just in case. Of course you must HTC Dev Unlock before you can give this a go. Developer Viperboy did all the testing for this and also has a ROM in the works so hit the f5 button. Links below.
